‘Lacquer’ refers to the natural paints collected from lacquer trees. It is estimated that lacquer was used in Korea in the light of the remains of the Taurus grave in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do. Lacquer is hardened through natural hardening in a generally closed space, It may take a few years or so to pass the year before the lacquer forms a coating and becomes completely hardened. However, it has a beautiful gloss and excellent retention function, and it is widely used in traditional crafts such as lacquerware.
Lee Jong – hoon has consistently presented a work that reinterprets the traditional lacquer in a modern way. This time, I introduce thirty pieces of lacquer moon jelly and shoji in the subject of “seven color feeling” in Seoul Hakgojae. It is an attempt to reintroduce lacquer into a genre of contemporary art, and embodies the beauty that embraces tradition and modernity.
This artist, who graduated from Dongguk University Buddhist Art Department, was interested in color painting. While studying the paintings of Goguryeo, I found signs of lacquer and I was impressed that the paintings of lacquer painted in the 7th century were preserved perfectly to this day. In 2004, he founded the Korea Lacquer Association and has been conducting lacquer researches and work together.
The material exhibited in this exhibition is the moon pot. The moon jar series was the largest form of clay, with an average height of 45cm or more, with the upper and lower sides glued together. This is not a perfect sphere, but a unique formative form that is gradually broken. The work did not use glazed pottery, but finished with basics using lacquer.
The lacquer coat is hardened through the heat as if baking after glazing on the ceramics, and the surface has brilliance and firmness. After that, according to the inspiration of the artist, inorganic pigment and organic pigment were mixed with lacquer and finished with solid lacquer or applied various techniques to draw the picture. The moon jar, finished with lacquer instead of glaze, means the artistic realization of the tradition and the present time, ie, concurrency.
According to the contents of the lacquer and the contents of the lacquer, it is called ‘Hongji’, ‘Moonlight’, ‘Moonlight’, ‘Akkie’, ‘Myeong Kyung’ and ‘ It was titled. It is an expression of heartbreak that ‘I want to have a good relationship while I am living’, moonlight is’ Looking at the moonlight to gain peace of mind ‘, and Moonyoung’ will always live in a modest attitude. In addition to this, Hee – gang talks about ‘listening mind to inner sound’, Myeong – kyung for ‘mind to reflect oneself’, and the annihilation about ‘deviating from everything’.
“The moon jar was a form and color that the past people could easily implement. On the other hand, lacquer was a valuable material that only the ruling class could enjoy. I added lacquer to the simple sentiments of the common people who hold the moon jar to realize artistic completeness. This is a reinterpretation of tradition, breaking the frame of thought. “
